Louisville, Kentucky - the birth place of Muhammad Ali and home to the Kentucky Derby played host to the 37th staging of the Ryder Cup. The US team, led by Paul Azinger, were coming off three successive defeats. It was crucial they stop the rot. But Europe, captained by Nick Faldo - Europe's all time points record holder - looked to be favourites. Faldo's team, a blend of experience and youth, seemed more than match for an American side that contained six rookies.
But the Ryder Cup is MatchPlay, head to head competition against a backdrop of highly patriotic support. At a Pep rally held earlier in the week Azinger recruited the US fans as his team's 13th man. Would it work?
The answer, emphatically, was yes, and in dramatic fashion!
